DRC elections rescheduled

JULY 30 IS THE NEW DATE FOR CONGOLESE TO ELECT THEIR NEXT PRESIDENT.

For several weeks now, we have impatiently awaited an announcement of a new poll date, ever since the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) decided to extend the deadline for registration of Parliamentary candidates and the deadline for payment of the $50,000 registration fee for Presidential candidates, requiring, quite logically, pushing back the poll date.

Three years ago, when the transitional government was put in place, it was stated that elections should take place by June 30, 2005.  Gradually the date was postponed to June 30, 2006 (extensions allowed).

This time, the election date is past that allowed by the extensions.  I am not certain that campaigning guidelines have been followed either, since I heard some mention of Mr. Malu Malu, head of the CEI, allowing campaigning ahead of the official start date (30 days before the election??).

But at least the elections are back on the calendar.

I, for one, am relieved.

Jeune Afrique Intelligent

Have you seen the latest JAI with the cover story on the DRC elections? I've only skimmed it but there are 10+ pages on DRC.

No!~ Is it online?? I will look for it! (I have to say, if this were my full time job, I would certainly expand my sources. As it stands, I wanted to post about it before two weeks go by and I'm still trying to report the 'news.')

Worries

Despite Jeune Afrique's apparent bias in favor of Kabila II, the big dossier is very in depth.

Now, as for the elections, I am really worried about June 30th... I mean these people are very capable of just starting another war for their own ego!...

Re: Worries

I know, I am worried too, particularly considering the Church's vocal objections to extending the date beyond June 30. Perhaps the idea to announce elections NOW for July is to avoid the annual June 30 rioting. I am not so concerned about an outright war at this stage (the east excepted, since shenanigans that threaten the populace continue there), but more upheaval is certainly not out of the question.
